Facsimile of 1944 Edition. The Ashley Book of Knots is an encyclopedia of knots written and illustrated by the American artist Clifford W. Ashley. First published in 1944, it was the culmination of over 11 years of work. The book contains exactly 3854 numbered entries and an estimated 7000 illustrations. The entries include knot instructions, uses, and some histories, categorized by type or function. It remains one of the most important and comprehensive books on knots. Due to its scope and wide availability, The Ashley Book of Knots has become a significant reference work in the field of knotting. The numbers Ashley assigned to each knot can be used to unambiguously identify them. This helps to identify knots despite local colloquialisms or identification changes. Citations to Ashley numbers are usually in the form: "The Constrictor Knot (ABOK #1249)", "ABOK #1249" or even simply "#1249" if the context of the reference is clear or already established. Some knots have more than one Ashley number due to having multiple uses or forms. For example, the main entry for #1249 is in the chapter on binding knots but it is also listed as #176 in a chapter on occupational knot usage.

This copy of The Ashley Book of Knots is what I had hoped I'm not a sailor. I'll probably never be involved in boating. But awhile ago I wanted to learn some knots. To be honest I didn't get The Ashley Book of Knots to learn knots. I've a couple other books and frankly between Wikipedia and the Grog Knots app, I've been learning all that I needed. But each of those repeatedly mention ABOK. So I looked here at Amazon. I didn't realize it at the time, but the copy I purchased was printed in 1944!It doesn't have the dust jacket, but I don't care. The pages are yellowing a bit but I don't care. The illustrations are from that period, all line drawings and are marvelous. The explanations and drawings are less than optimal for learning and are difficult to follow compared to animated instructions online or in the Grog app. Ashley's narrative regarding history is priceless. I have been enjoying very much just picking a spot in the book and reading for awhile. He shows many variations of knots. There are weird esoteric knots. There are the tried and true knots.Don't get this book to learn knots.Get this book if you want flavor and historical context.Oh, and it smells like an old bookstore...:-)Truly a Magnum Opus My fellow Christians should take no offense when I call this the Bible of knots and rope work. Ashley must've received divine inspiration for this magnum opus because it contains from the most basic to knots you shouldn't use with explanations why to artistic challenges that you'll probably never even attempt! This one's a wonderful addition to the family library that I'll pass down through the our generations. Not basic enough for me. It is an excellent compilation of knots, but I was - perhaps naively - expecting more clear explanations and step-by-step instructions. It seems to have been written for people with some knotting experience. I would recommend the book to anyone who has either 1) some experience tying knots or 2) someone with better 3D spatial acuity than I have. I must give the book 4 stars because it is excellent in its own right, but not for my needs.
