Title: The Unwinding of the Miracle Pdf A Memoir of Life, Death, and Everything That Comes After
As a young mother facing a terminal diagnosis, Julie Yip-Williams began to write her story, a story like no other. What began as the chronicle of an imminent and early death became something much more—a powerful exhortation to the living.

“Everything worth understanding and holding on to is in this book.”—Kelly Corrigan, New York Times bestselling author of The Middle Place and Tell Me More

That Julie Yip-Williams survived infancy was a miracle. Born blind in Vietnam, she narrowly escaped euthanasia at the hands of her grandmother, only to flee with her family the political upheaval of her country in the late 1970s. Loaded into a rickety boat with three hundred other refugees, Julie made it to Hong Kong and, ultimately, America, where a surgeon at UCLA gave her partial sight. She would go on to become a Harvard-educated lawyer, with a husband, a family, and a life she had once assumed would be impossible. Then, at age thirty-seven, with two little girls at home, Julie was diagnosed with terminal metastatic colon cancer, and a different journey began.

The Unwinding of the Miracle is the story of a vigorous life refracted through the prism of imminent death. When she was first diagnosed, Julie Yip-Williams sought clarity and guidance through the experience and, finding none, began to write her way through it—a chronicle that grew beyond her imagining. Motherhood, marriage, the immigrant experience, ambition, love, wanderlust, tennis, fortune-tellers, grief, reincarnation, jealousy, comfort, pain, the marvel of the body in full rebellion—this book is as sprawling and majestic as the life it records. It is inspiring and instructive, delightful and shattering. It is a book of indelible moments, seared deep—an incomparable guide to living vividly by facing hard truths consciously.

With humor, bracing honesty, and the cleansing power of well-deployed anger, Julie Yip-Williams set the stage for her lasting legacy and one final miracle: the story of her life.

Advance praise for The Unwinding of the Miracle

“A beautifully written, moving, and compassionate chronicle that deserves to be read and absorbed widely.”—Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies

“Julie Yip-Williams lived a life defined by effort and incredible self-reliance. But in this searing memoir of increasing vulnerability, she dismantles and then reconstructs what it means to be triumphant.”—Lucy Kalanithi

How to approach death "with the dignity and grace of an evolved soul." I am a sucker for bleak books and chose this one because of the blurb by Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee author, of the Emperor of All Maladies, which I loved. But it turns out that this book is not bleak. Mostly it's instructive, inspirational, and hopeful. Julie Yip-Williams, with beliefs based in Buddhism, shows the world through her words how to approach death with" the dignity and grace of an evolved soul." As someone who has tried and failed at Christianity (for which I have no regrets), I find her philosophy thought-provoking. If there's a silver lining in this beyond this pretty brilliant book, it's that she had access to excellent care and was blessed with seemingly exceedingly intelligent and amazingly talented children and an excellent support system. The authors' recounting of her life (which almost ended in infanticide), including up-by-her bootstraps educational efforts achieved in spite of blindness, her battle with stage IV cancer (including intimate details about her treatment and the disease's progression), and thoughts about her impending death are intertwined masterfully. Like Paul Kalanithi's book When Breath Becomes Air, she shows readers what choosing to live a life less ordinary in the face of tragedy looks like. What I love most is that she acknowledges her own flaws in thinking and acting (and that of others) in the face of this unfairness and "how impotent we truly are in the face of unseen forces that would cause the earth to tremble or cells to mutate and send a body into full rebellion against itself," yet sees through to the beauty in life. In the end, she exhorts us to, "Live while you're living.""Live while you are living" I believe that you cannot read this book without being changed by the reading of it.At age 37 Julie Yip-Williams is given a death sentence. This memoir is her relating her journey.I do not want to bring any spoilers into this review. This book is too much an experience that I don't want to harm by telling too much.Ms. Yip-Williams will bring us to embrace life by sharing the final months of her life. When you face hard truths in your life you are able to "live vividly."In the final analysis "all we have is ourselves".If you like to read about how people handle life in the most extreme of circumstances then you will be enthralled by the telling of her story. It just doesn't get more powerful than this.Into the mind of a true survivor - fighting until its time to stop - & then graciously letting go The Unwinding of the Miracle is a memoir written by Julie Yip-Williams. The book was published posthumously. The author describes her life journey from being born almost blind in Vietnam, where she was sent to a medicine man to "make her sleep forever." She survived that close call and then, at three, lived for weeks as a refugee on a boat without food or water, leaving Vietnam. She regained some of her sight surgically after coming to America, and went on to travel the world, mostly alone. She went to Harvard and became a lawyer, moved to New York City, where she met the love of her life, Josh. They married and they had two daughters. Life against all odds was going as hoped until she found herself in a California hospital with vomiting and stomach pains, and was diagnosed at age 37 with stage lV colon cancer. This book is Julies way of addressing her future and leaving something tangible for her daughters to read and know her by, after she is gone. It describes her fight with clinical trials (3) and how she never gave up trying to beat the insidious cancer that metastasized from her colon to her lungs, uterus, and peritoneal area. Her brain remained cancer free until the end. This book is about living and meeting goals, and about knowing when to go when it's your time. Julie writes content to her husbands second wife (in jest but in all honesty) and expresses the envy she has for a woman she doesn't know, but who may take her place. Of course, this is Julies place and everyone wanted her there. Julies messages go from angry to soft as the cancer spreads and she accepts her fate.I am a nurse and deal with patients disease processes every day. I, on the sidelines, watch as they are ill, diagnosed, treated or not, and then gradually descend into deeper and deeper illness, weakness, jaundice, inability to eat, and progressive pain. Even the toughest individuals become stripped of their desire to live with the symptoms that control their life at the end of a progressive disease.I have also watched my dad die of cancer, and lost my brother when he was 29. I am no stranger to death. While nobody knows when or where they will be when handed their own death sentence, we all must experience this passage. We will not avoid it. My hope as a caregiver has always been to face my own death with dignity, as Julie does. This is a book takes you into the mind of a true survivor. The Unwinding of the Miracle is a helpful book to read if one is trying to find answers and solutions about their own mortality.
